Netflix Streaming Report: Horns, Starship Troopers, Lars and the Real Girl, and More

Welcome to your Netflix Streaming Report for February 5, 2015. After the long week you deserve a relaxing staycation with a bowl of popcorn, a bucket of ice cream, and only your Netflix queue to judge you. This past week, Netflix Watch Instant has been kind enough to supply us with Horns, Starship Troopers, Hitch, Lars and the Real Girl, and more, which you can find below along with all of the additional titles added this February.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown (Alfonso Gomez-Rejon) Rated R [90 min] – 65 years after a masked serial killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, the so-called ‘moonlight murders’ begin again. Is it a copycat or something even more sinister? A lonely high school girl, with dark secrets of her own, may be the key to catching him.Director: Starring Addison Timlin, Veronica Cartwright, Anthony Anderson, Travis Tope

This meta-remake of the 1976 film of the same name is interesting. It is shot fairly poorly and it meanders quite a bit, but there is some terrifying moments that work well. It’s not a successful horror, but it works to a certain extent if you’re patient. (Watch it now)

Horns (Alexandre Aja) Rated R [120 min] – In the aftermath of his girlfriend’s mysterious death, a young man awakens to strange horns sprouting from his temples. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Max Minghella, and Joe Anderson

On the other hand, this highly anticipated horror film starring Daniel Radcliffe did not really work at all. It’s a unique concept, but the dialogue, character development, and direction is pretty terrible. It’s pretty sad considering this is from Alexandre Aja who did the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, which is really great in my opinion. (Watch it now)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (Michael Pressman) Rated PG [88 min] – The Turtles and the Shredder battle once again, this time for the last cannister of the ooze that created the Turtles, which Shredder wants to create an army of new mutants. Starring Paige Turco, David Warner, Michelan Sisti, Leif Tilden, Kenn Scott, Mark Caso, and Ernie Reyes Jr.

After see the Michael Bay produced TMNT reboot last year, I would pick the classic, cheesy original films than the CGI-laden silliness. They don’t completely hold up, but there is still some fun to be had if you choose to revisit this. (Watch it now)

Starship Troopers (Paul Verhoeven) Rated R [129 min] – Humans in a fascistic, militaristic future do battle with giant alien bugs in a fight for survival. Starring Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Jake Busey, and Neil Patrick Harris

That moment when Neil Patrick Harris’ film career propels into super stardom… In a post Edge of Tomorrow world, Starship Troopers is still a great sci-fi action thriller with some genuinely entertaining moments. (Watch it now)

Lars and the Real Girl (Craig Gillespie) Rated PG-13 [106 min] – A delusional young man strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet. Starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, and Paul Schneider

If you like bizarre indie movies, this is by far one of the best. Ryan Gosling shines bright as the introverted Lars, which would catapult his indie darling status to obtain roles in Drive, Blue Valentine, Only God Forgives, and The Place Beyond the Pines. (Watch it now)

Leaving Las Vegas (Mike Figgis) Rated R [111 min] – Ben Sanderson, an alcoholic Hollywood screenwriter who lost everything because of his drinking, arrives in Las Vegas to drink himself to death. There, he meets and forms an uneasy friendship and non-interference pact with prostitute Sera. Starring Nicolas Cage, Elisabeth Shue, and Julian Sands

Some may not believe me if I told you this, but Nicolas Cage has real acting talent and was awarded an Oscar for his performance for his role in this film. A true gem in his career that everyone must witness. (Watch it now)

Joe (David Gordon Green) Rated R [117 min] – An ex-con, who is the unlikeliest of role models, meets a 15-year-old boy and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin. Starring Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan, and Gary Poulter

Hitch (Andy Tennant) Rated PG-13 [118 min] – While helping his latest client woo the fine lady of his dreams, a professional “date doctor” finds that his game doesn’t quite work on the gossip columnist with whom he’s smitten. Starring Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kevin James, Amber Valletta, and Adam Arkin
